The Substance
Coralie Fargeat's unflinching critique examines the tyranny of women's appearance along with the feared consequences of advancing years. Presence Film
Soderbergh challenges his creative boundaries in this nifty paranormal narrative filmed completely from the perspective of the phantom. After a clan including mother Rebekah and her distressed teen Chloe settles into their recent residence, the filming device – as the unseen entity – shadows their actions. The daughter appears aware of the poltergeist, and the entity appears guarding her. However, the motive remains? This is an entertaining concept that doesn't outstay its welcome, featuring a surprise that may be unexpected. This Saturday, multiple showings, Sky Cinema Premiere
Nicolas Cage's Meta Comedy
Cage wholeheartedly adopts his eccentric image in this self-referential adventure. He portrays a self-obsessed film star named Nicolas Cage who takes on a lucrative offer to appear at a festive event at a Mediterranean location for the rich superfan Javi. Contacted by the intelligence agency to investigate the suspected cartel boss, the actor's “nouveau shamanic acting ability” comes in handy. Saturday 11 October, 9pm, Channel 4
The Black Phone Horror
The director's locked-room horror stands strong without requiring a follow-up. Taking place in 1978 Denver, a series of child abductions has rendered the children frightened. After Finney is taken by the kidnapper and held captive in a cellar, he fears a fatal end. Yet the disconnected phone in the room continues to ring, with eerie communicators giving advice, and the intuitive nightmares of Gwen, his sister may be his salvation. A genuinely scary movie. October 11th, 10.50pm, Film4
The Tammy Faye Biopic
In the battle between God and Mammon, the winner is obvious for materialism in Showalter's delightfully tacky film adaptation regarding the shamed televangelist and her criminal husband. Garfield portrays the corrupt Bakker, who states at the beginning, “God does not want us to be poor,”. He and Tammy Faye begin profiting from the nation's religious faith. It's an extravaganza of bad interior design, overdone appearance and insincerity, though Chastain manages to present Tammy Faye in a likable light. October 14th, 1.15am, the Film4 channel
The Spy Mystery
This period's additional entry from the filmmaker presents a intelligence thriller as tight as the polo necks sported by Fassbender's UK spy. Tom Burke, Regé-Jean Page, Naomie Harris and Marisa Abela take part the intelligent intelligence fun. October 17th, 8.05am, 12.55pm, 8pm, Sky Cinema Premiere
