The EU might “respond swiftly and decisively” in response to what it deems “unwarranted” visa bans imposed by the United States on five Europeans involved in combating digital hatred and disinformation, a European Commission spokesperson has said.
European Leaders Decry US Action as ‘Coercion’
European leaders including the French president charged Washington of “bullying and threats”, following the travel bans were placed on individuals that were central to efforts to enact laws governing US-based technology firms.
“For far too long, ideologues in Europe have spearheaded coordinated campaigns to coerce American platforms to punish US perspectives they oppose,” wrote a senior US official in a social media post. “The current administration will no longer tolerate these egregious acts of extraterritorial censorship.”
Broad Criticism From EU Nations
Nations including Germany, Spain, and the UK, alongside numerous EU representatives supported France in criticizing the decision.
The bans were imposed this week on a former EU commissioner involved in crafting the EU’s digital governance law, as well as several anti-disinformation campaigners, including Germany and the United Kingdom.
A Deepening Dispute Over Regulation
The DSA is viewed by Washington as a type of speech restriction, whereas EU authorities argue the rules are necessary to combat inflammatory language and falsehoods.
This row threatens to become a facet of a much broader existing political and ideological clash between Washington and European institutions.
